Friday, 10 February from 14.00 to 15.00 Industrial Architecture

A tour of Bolle, the historical milk factory, in Alt-Moabit

We will tour the Bolle area at the "Spreebogen". A large brick building built in 1886 for 2000 employees in the period style is conserved and has been wonderfully restored. The whole area was renovated after 1990 and is now in use. Inside the old building there are old photographs on display showing the distribution of milk and milk products by Bolle´s horse drawn carriages, the so called "Bimmel Bolle" and the Interior Ministry is also on the premises..

After the walk (part of which will be indoors) ,we can warm up in one of the charming cafés in the area.

►Meeting Point: S Bellevue, entrance area. Leave the platform via the staircase and we will meet inside the station downstairs.

I have been responsible for art@architecture alone for more than a year. It
has been a very interesting and enjoyable task. But it does become a burden
at times. So if you are interested in art and architecture and would like to
join me in planning and organizing I would appreciate it very much.

Join us to discuss Owen Matthews‘ Stalin‘s Children, the documentation of three generations in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia, written by the son of a Russian woman and a Briton.

In April, we will discuss two of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize laureates, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia, and Leymah Gbowee, women‘s rights activist in Liberia. A copy of Sirleaf‘s book This Child Will be Great will be circulating in the group, and Gbowee‘s autobiography Mighty Be Our Powers may also be available.

Our book for this month is In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson, the story of US Ambassador William Dodd and his family during their first year in Berlin. They arrived in 1933 when Hitler had just come into power. As Berliners, many are familiar with these events and this novel, based on real diaries of Larson‘s daughter and period research, gives a different perspective on the period.

Our book for this month is The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver, which centers around the experiences of Harrison Shepherd, a character who records his story and observations in notebooks and diaries, starting as a teen in 1930‘s Mexico and continuing into the McCarthy era in the USA. ‪Come and join our group to improve your spoken English. You can improve your grammar or widen your vocabulary by reading interesting articles on all subjects thinkable. Everyone is welcome, whatever her standard of English. Anna Netrebko is the world's most famous soprano, an opera singer with pop-star status, but she does not regard herself as a diva. She thinks opera singing is just an ordinary job, which she chose because there was less competition than in acting. We will read her account of her rise to fame, from cleaning toilets to the star of "La Traviata".

Interview with Eleni Fountoulaki

The Spanish Speakers start the year 2012 with great enthusiasm and new projects.

In February we invite you to participate in a new activity :

We will start  informal interviews with  members of the Club, talk about  their home countries, their travel, their hobbies. We also consider to interview persons that are not members of the Club but come from an exotic place or provide an interesting history/ live story.

For our first interview we invited Eleni Fountoulaki, new member of the BIWC and part of the group of Spanish Speakers.

Eleni is Greek, enchanting, mother, very active and lives a very interesting life.  We believe this activity of the Spanish Speakers will be pleasant and successful for our guest and the ladies that will join the event.

FEAR NOT THE KNIFE was the first BIWC COOKING! demo held (in 2008) and is the most

requested! Mastering your knife is one of the most useful skills to have in a kitchen. Do you want to learn how to use a knife like the pros do? The chef's knife is one of the most important and versatile tools in the kitchen: learn the fundamentals of using a knife safely. As you work with your knife, you will learn control and how to slice, dice and chop. We will look at various kitchen knives, their uses and also discuss garnishing techniques. After class we will sample different soups made with various cuts of veggies. With recipes in hand, you will be able to take your lesson home and get cooking. E-mail Jill directly to register and to receive a list of supplies to bring to this fast-paced and informative demo.

This may be George Clooney's best acting role yet, deserving of an Academy award. See Heddi's review of the film at "CINEMA SCENE – Films Featured".

Join us for this film at Potsdamer Platz, where we can also pick up our Berlinale programs (Berlin's International Film Festival from 9 – 19 February). Those interested can come along for a drink at Billy Wilder's pub in the Film Haus, where we can chat about the film or the up- coming festival.

Fun & Fitness

Tuesdays 10.30 to 11.30

We work out with a bilingual, experienced trainer / physiotherapist.
The course is suitable for all ages and offers a variety of exercises such as gymnastics, stretching, walking, relaxing and massage that are supported by rhythmic music. Equipment is provided: mats, gymnastic balls, rubber bands, bats and other items.
We are flexible as far as participation is concerned, so you can join us on any Tuesday. We look forward to seeing you.
Venue: The health centre at the Krankenhaus Waldfriede (Gesundheitszentrum Prima Vita), corner of Argentinische Allee and Fischerhüttenstr., Berlin-Zehlendorf.
Getting there: U3 or buses 118, 184 or 629 to Krumme Lanke or S1 to Mexikoplatz and a short walk.
Cost: The fee is 74 € per person for ten lessons.

Pilates Gymnastics Group

Pilates is suitable for all ages and is based on exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, which stretch, lengthen and strengthen muscles focusing on connector muscle groups. Through all exercises, the powerhouse is activated. This is the core group of muscles in the body surrounding the stomach, ribs and vertebrae. Continuous practice will change the shape of your body.

· After 10 lessons you will see the difference

· After 20 lessons others will see the difference

· After 30 lessons you will have changed the shape of your body.

Please bring along your sportswear, socks and a towel.

►Venue: Ballett- und Tanzstudio Zehlendorf, Ludwigsfelder Str. 40, 14165 Berlin

►Getting there: S1 to Zehlendorf, then take the Bus 115 going to Spanische Allee, get off at Ludwigsfelderstraße or take Bus 101 to Sachtlebenstraße, get off at Gutzmannstraße. From there walk along Gutzmannstraße and turn right into Ludwigsfelderstraße.

►Cost: 80 € per course of 10 lessons. Please note that some medical insurance companies offer their members a refund for one such prophylactic course every two years, if run by an accredited trainer such as ours.

Grace & Exercise

Mondays, 10.00 to 11.00

There are openings in this class: the class consists of exercises for suppleness, strength and control. Our goals are to nourish the body through movement and to establish awareness of all parts of the body.

This awareness creates a sense of control that enables one to execute a movement to one‘s full potential—this awareness can be applied to all daily activities. Flexibility is important in maintaining a normal range of movement, helping to prevent injuries, and keeping fit with age.

The class is structured so that each individual can benefit according to her initial level of fitness, which will increase with persistence.
