We are going sailing on the Prosit, at the Akademischer Seglerverein yacht club. At over 20 metres long, the Prosit is the largest yacht in Berlin.

To join us you must be able to swim, and be physically fit. Street shoes are not allowed on deck, so please bring along a second pair of boat or sport shoes.

Flaeming Skate – Luckenwalde to Jüterbog (approx. 22 km)

We will be going south of Berlin to cycle along a section of the 200 km of paths created especially for skaters and cyclists. There will also be an opportunity to view the Zinna monastery. More information is available on www.flaeming-skate.de. Tour details will be e-mailed mid-September.

“I had a farm in Africa…” Karen Blixen’s memoirs begin with a loving description of the country where she and her husband lived and farmed for many years. Join us to discuss Blixen’s “Out of Africa,” which was published under her pen name, Isak Dinesen. For background reading, Sarah Wheeler’s “Too Close to the Sun” describes Blixen’s relationship with Denys Finch-Hatton.

Our book for December will be “Leap of Faith,” the memoirs of Queen Noor of Jordan.

After this meeting we are planning a potluck luncheon for Humaira, and who hopes to be able to attend the book group meeting. Please call Thora to find out whether the luncheon will take place.

We will discuss Janice Y.K. Lee’s first novel “The Piano Teacher.” It is a story about colonial Hong Kong in the 1950s involving love, intrigue and the effects of World War II on its characters.

Our book for December will be Edith Hahn Beer’s “The Nazi Officer’s Wife.”

This time we have chosen the very popular German Biergarten and restaurant "Joe Beau Lais" in the posh area of Grunewald. It was founded in 1974 by Detlef Gerhard whose nickname was Joe. Joe loved to drink Beaujolais wine, which gives the restaurant its name.

Guided Tour of new BBI Airport

We will be visiting the building site of the future airport all Berlin residents will be using after 2012.

The “Construction Site Experience” tour starts in Airportworld BBI, continues via the BBI Infotower and ends with a tour of the BBI construction site. The observation platform of the 32-metre-high Infotower offers a view of the construction site, the size of which is equivalent to 2,000 football pitches. The view from the Infotower stretches as far as the television tower on Alexanderplatz. The platform’s 3D telescope shows a computer animation of how BBI will look on completion in 2012.The terminal, with its divided facades and clear geometric forms, continues architectural elements ranging from the Prussian designer Karl Friedrich Schinkel to the Bauhaus style. The central access road, which will be an avenue lined with trees, picks up characteristic features from the townscapes and countryside of the Berlin/Brandenburg region.
