I have been responsible for art@architecture alone for more than a year. It
has been a very interesting and enjoyable task. But it does become a burden
at times. So if you are interested in art and architecture and would like to
join me in planning and organizing I would appreciate it very much.

EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE AWARDS

You may be surprised to learn that around 100 members volunteer in on one way or another to keep the Club running. These volunteers offer help with small, one-off tasks and others contribute with long-term roles. The BIWC only functions because we have so many capable and willing volunteers. Your contributions of time and enthusiasm are certainly appreciated by the EC and the membership in general.

Among the volunteers are a few special members who have given their time and energy to the Club over long periods of time.

The Excellence in Service Award recognises BIWC members who are currently active in the Club who have consistently made outstanding contributions to the Club and who have displayed unselfish service to other BIWC members over a period of at least the prior two years.

Generally, such contributions to the Club have been ̳behind the scenes‘ and have gone unrecognised. This honour is traditionally awarded at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

We are now accepting nominations from our members for women you think should receive this award. Please give some thought to whom you think deserve this very special recognition.

Criteria: The person receiving the award has been a consistent volunteer in some capacity (often not well known to the membership) and for at least the last two years.

Not eligible:

1. Executive Committee members and those who have served on the EC in the past two years

2. Members who received the award in the past three years.

Those who have received the award in the past MAY receive the award if they meet the criterion of consistent service over the past two years. The nomination must include the member‘s name and a description of what she has been doing for the Club during this 2-year frame. A form is enclosed in this Newsletter and is also available on the website. Your submittals can also be sent via email, mail or fax to any member of the EC, but if you submit by email a signed hard copy must also be submitted since these are kept on file.

The EC will select the recipients from the names and written nominations presented to us by our members.

The Nominations Page is on Page 13 of the Feb Newsletter. You may make a copy of it to complete, or simply write down the information on a separate sheet of paper and send to the address given

The BIWC Executive Committee cordially invites you to our Annual General Meeting. Join us as we review the Club‘s activities in 2011 and recognize the unsung heroines who had given their valuable time and skills for the club. Exercise your right to approve the 2012 Budget and vote for the incoming Executive Committee members. Know what the Club has in store for you in 2012. And, more importantly, grab this chance to have fun and enjoy the evening with your friends!

We are pleased to announce that we are again abe to use the wonderful facilities of the Deutsche Bank for the 2012 AGM. Our AGM will therefore be held at Friedrichsaal, 4th Floor Deutsche Bank Building, Unter den Linden 13/15 (entrance at Charlottenstraße), 10117 Berlin.

Registration for the AGM is required!

Please register by Sunday, March 11 for attendance at this meeting. You may register via e-mail or via post to Claudia Sanchez Morzan. Should you need to cancel your registration, it is important that you advise us the soonest possible time.

The AGM is exclusively for official BIWC members only. Official members of BIWC are those whose annual membership fees for 2012 have been received in the BIWC bank account.

Friday, 10 February from 14.00 to 15.00 Industrial Architecture

A tour of Bolle, the historical milk factory, in Alt-Moabit

We will tour the Bolle area at the "Spreebogen". A large brick building built in 1886 for 2000 employees in the period style is conserved and has been wonderfully restored. The whole area was renovated after 1990 and is now in use. Inside the old building there are old photographs on display showing the distribution of milk and milk products by Bolle´s horse drawn carriages, the so called "Bimmel Bolle" and the Interior Ministry is also on the premises..

After the walk (part of which will be indoors) ,we can warm up in one of the charming cafés in the area.

►Meeting Point: S Bellevue, entrance area. Leave the platform via the staircase and we will meet inside the station downstairs.

February Social Event In the Shoes of Romeo’s Juliet Friday, 17 February Workshop: 10.00-12.00 Show: 19.30 (Meet-and-greet with Dr. Christiane Theobald: 18.15)

Tanz ist KLASSE! and the Staatsballett Berlin invites the BIWC to the new rooms of the Deutsche Oper Berlin to experience an exciting and entertaining day of discovering a Shakespearen classic: Romeo & Juliet.

In the morning, we have a workshop with dance teacher and dramaturge, Kathlyn Pope. To prepare us for the evening‘s performance, she will discuss the plot, introduce the characters, and introduce the moves of the dancers in a new way, particularly by executing the dance moves ourselves! Afterwards, we will lunch at the Deutsche Oper canteen. Food and drinks are at one‘s own expense.

In the evening, we‘ll have a rare chance to meet Dr. Christiane Theobald, Staatsballett Berlin ‘s deputy and director of operations, for a glass of sparkling wine and a tour of the rehearsal halls and premises. Dr. Theobald launched Tanz ist KLASSE! to realize the dream of great dancer and former ballet director Gert Reinholm—that children and youth, regardless of social class and cultural background—should be given access to dance.

As a climax to the day, we shall watch the ballet performance of Romeo and Juliet.

This event is open to partners and guests, young and old. Members may take the workshop or watch the ballet but we strongly recommend attending both to complete this unique experience.

We look forward to an eventful day!

Biking

Join us to discuss Owen Matthews‘ Stalin‘s Children, the documentation of three generations in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia, written by the son of a Russian woman and a Briton.

In April, we will discuss two of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize laureates, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia, and Leymah Gbowee, women‘s rights activist in Liberia. A copy of Sirleaf‘s book This Child Will be Great will be circulating in the group, and Gbowee‘s autobiography Mighty Be Our Powers may also be available.

Our book for this month is In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson, the story of US Ambassador William Dodd and his family during their first year in Berlin. They arrived in 1933 when Hitler had just come into power. As Berliners, many are familiar with these events and this novel, based on real diaries of Larson‘s daughter and period research, gives a different perspective on the period.

‪Come and join our group to improve your spoken English. You can improve your grammar or widen your vocabulary by reading interesting articles on all subjects thinkable. Everyone is welcome, whatever her standard of English. Anna Netrebko is the world's most famous soprano, an opera singer with pop-star status, but she does not regard herself as a diva. She thinks opera singing is just an ordinary job, which she chose because there was less competition than in acting. We will read her account of her rise to fame, from cleaning toilets to the star of "La Traviata".

Interview with Eleni Fountoulaki

The Spanish Speakers start the year 2012 with great enthusiasm and new projects.

In February we invite you to participate in a new activity :

We will start  informal interviews with  members of the Club, talk about  their home countries, their travel, their hobbies. We also consider to interview persons that are not members of the Club but come from an exotic place or provide an interesting history/ live story.

For our first interview we invited Eleni Fountoulaki, new member of the BIWC and part of the group of Spanish Speakers.

Eleni is Greek, enchanting, mother, very active and lives a very interesting life.  We believe this activity of the Spanish Speakers will be pleasant and successful for our guest and the ladies that will join the event.
