Thursday, 15 April at 11.00
A Curator’s Guided Tour of the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM)

Thanks to Monika Brust, we will be privileged to have one of the curators, Dr.Otterstedt, as our guide on a tour of this special museum.
Founded in 1888 as a "collection of ancient musical instruments", the museum has gained the reputation of being the largest and most representative musical instrument collection in Germany. It possesses around 3,500 instruments from the 17th century onward, with some 800 pieces presented in the permanent exhibition. Most of them are still playable and their high quality of sound has been maintained. We will also have the opportunity to hear some of the instruments being played.
The Museum is also home to a massive 1929 Mighty Wurlitzer organ with 1228 pipes, 175 stops and 43 pistons.
More details and the registration form will be provided in the April Newsletter.

Your contributions of time and enthusiasm are certainly appreciated by the EC and by the membership in general.

Among those volunteers are a few special members who give to the Club over long periods of time. One way to acknowledge this contribution publicly is BIWC’s Excellence in Service Award.

Criteria:

The person receiving the award has been a consistent volunteer in some capacity (often not well known to the membership) for at least the last two years.
Not eligible: (1) Executive Committee members and those who have served on the EC in the past two years. (2) Members who have received the award in the past three years.

(Once the three years are over, they can receive it again so long as there has been consistant service rendered for the 2 years prior to the nomination. )

The nomination must include the member’s name and a description of what she has been doing for the Club during this 2-year time frame.

The Excellence in Service Award recognizes BIWC members who are currently active in the Club and who have consistently made outstanding contributions to the Club and displayed unselfish service to other BIWC members over a period of at least the prior two years. Generally, such contributions have been ‘behind the scenes’ and have gone unrecognized.
This honor is traditionally awarded at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). We are now accepting written nominations from our members for women you think deserve this award. Please give some thought to whom you think should receive this very special recognition.

The EC would like to ask you to put forward your nomination for members worthy of this honour by completing this form.

Description: After two most enjoyable trips to Stockholm and Copenhagen, our members are enthusiastic to continue their tour of European capital cities. Dublin has been chosen as the next city on the agenda. We are planning a BIWC trip from 13-16 May 2010, which is a long weekend in Germany, Himmelfahrt/Ascension Thursday. We have made a provisional reservation at a 3 star hotel in the city centre, single rooms for 75 € / twin rooms 45 € per person per night including breakfast (10% deposit required at registration). The national airline Aer Lingus and Ryanair have flights currently ranging in price from approx. €112 - €134 return, which should be booked by participants as soon as possible. We have lots of ideas including tours, (e.g. a walking tour of Georgian Dublin and a bus tour around Dublin Bay, past Dun Laoghaire’s yacht harbour and James Joyce’s Tower, continuing through the Wicklow mountains to Powerscourt House and Gardens),visits to museums, theatres, galleries, the Guinness brewery and last but not least, the traditional Irish Pub (including singing, dancing and lots of craic (fun)) to name but a few. All BIWC members are welcome to join us. Please contact Stephanie Mosler or Anna Mlynarek, as soon as possible. Please note the deadline date for registration is 15 January, 2010. We are presently planning a programme, which will be sent to interested members soonest. “Céad míle fáilte”, ( “A Hundred Thousand Welcomes”).
